Green technology to enhance agriculture and conflict waste management

In Amman, ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) held the 7th meeting of its technical committee and an expert group meeting on Green Technology Transfer, Adaptation and Investment required for the implementation of the SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production, with focus on improving agriculture and conflict waste management.

Both meetings were organized on 29-31 July in cooperation with the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN), UN Technology Bank for LDCs and Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO).

Discussions revolved around the key priorities of green technology, which aims to reduce the impact of human activity on the environment, ways to fund it and what hampers investing in it. Participants also discussed employment opportunities through green technology.

On the sidelines of the meeting, an interactive exhibition showcased examples of green technologies that could be applied in member countries to enhance the implementation of SDG 12, allowing young innovators and experts to network towards new horizons.

ESCWA Chief holds high-level meetings in Amman

In Amman, Jordan, ESCWA Executive Secretary, Rola Dashti, visited on 30 July several high-level officials on top of a senior delegation from the regional commission.

Dashti met with HRH Prince ElHassan bin Talal who expressed hope in the critical role that ESCWA can play in a multilateral and institutional reconstruction phase of the Arab countries emerging from conflict.

The Chief of ESCWA also met with HRH Princess Sumaya bint ElHassan, the President of the Royal Scientific Society in Jordan, which hosts ESCWA Technology Centre. Both parties discussed future cooperation especially regarding the Arab Science Forum and technology innovation for sustainable development.

In addition, ESCWA delegation met with the Jordanian Ministers of Agriculture, Foreign Affairs and Planning. Discussions revolved around mutual cooperation and the continuous support to the Hashemite Kingdom.

Renewable energy applications in rural areas of Jordan

ESCWA conducted two site visits in Jordan on 23 and 24 July in Al-Asha’ary in Ma’an and in Batir and Rakin in Al Karak to meet with the local stakeholders, which included the municipalities, the community-based organizations (CBOs), and active women entrepreneurs. The meetings were conducted within the framework of the Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in rural areas of the Arab Region (REGEND) funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

To finalize the selection of the community where REGEND will implement its pilot projects and capacity-building activities, ESCWA organized a Focus Group Meeting in Amman on 25 July 2019 where Al-Asha’ary was selected. In addition, Batir and Rakin will also be considered for possible activities within the framework of the REGEND project.

Throughout the mission, ESCWA was joined by representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture.

YPP Career Support Programme for 3rd time at ESCWA

After its success in hosting the YPP Career Support Programme in 2011 and 2012 and following a decision by OHR to decentralize it starting in 2019, ESCWA once again hosted the Programme from 22 to 26 July 2019. The Programme was organized and delivered in its entirety using only ESCWA internal resources.

34 participants from 12 departments took part in the Programme, namely: ECA, ECLAC, ESCAP, OHCHR, UNOG, UNCTAD, DESA, DGC, DOS, OLA, UNDSS and ESCWA.

The Programme included sessions on various human resources topics including HR contracts, benefits and entitlements, competency-based interviewing, performance management and career development; the YPP Managed Reassignment Programme; UN reforms; the UN internal justice system; social media; Young UN; and writing for the UN.

The group also visited the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at its headquarters in the southern town of Naqoura.

Many social activities were also organized, which strengthened bonds between participants.

ESCWA signs technical cooperation framework with Yemen

On 31 July, ESCWA signed a technical cooperation framework with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation of Yemen.

The Yemeni delegation was led by the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Mr. Nageeb Mansour Al-Oj, and ESCWA was represented by the Executive Secretary, Ms. Rola Dashti.

Within the cooperation framework, ESCWA will provide technical support in different areas including reconstruction and peacebuilding programmes; planning, economic development, policy evaluation and poverty reduction; achieving the Sustainable Development; capacity-building on the use of economic models; institutional evaluation and development; statistics field; labour market field; environment and climate change field.
 
ESCWA will also implement technical cooperation activities and coordinate with other UN organizations to ensure consistency of implementation and to avoid duplication in the provision of support.

Did you know...

… that, even while protection efforts are increasing, the Earth’s forests continue to shrink?

More than 90% of Arab land area is classified as arid or semi-arid where increasing degradation of the land makes it susceptible to desertification. About two thirds of arable land in the Arab region is considered degraded, and 25% of that severely to very severely degraded.

Forests are key to combating climate change and protecting biodiversity. Great strides have been made in the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems in the Arab region: 15 countries have protected at least 10% of their biodiversity and 2 countries protect at least more than 50%.
