Technical Cooperation framework with Iraq

On 30 May, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti and Iraqi Minister of Planning Nouri Al-Dulaimi signed a Technical Cooperation (TC) framework for the period 2019-2020.

The TC framework revolves around fourteen guiding areas, including the assessment of the climate change impact; strengthening food security; providing technical support in the fields of technology, statistics, and transport and road safety; developing a national multidimensional poverty index; achieving financial sustainability and stimulating the labour market; and developing standard economic models.

ESCWA bolsters cooperation with UN-Habitat

On 27 May, on the sidelines of her participation in the first UN Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, ESCWA Chief Rola Dashti, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UN Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Sharif to strengthen cooperation between the two sister entities and achieve common goals concerning the New Urban Agenda (NUA), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and internationally agreed environmental commitments.

The MoU includes consultation and exchange of information in addition to exerting joint efforts to contribute to the implementation of the Arab Strategy for Housing and Urban Development 2030 as a Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the implementation of the NUA that will represent the regional expression of the Arab region.

ESCWA pursues cooperation with UNEP

On the sidelines of the first UN Habitat Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, Executive Secretary Rola Dashti, signed on 27 May a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UN Environment Acting Chief Joyce Msuya to pursue mutual cooperation on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This includes environment-related consultations for the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development; support to the Joint Committee on Environment and Development in the Arab Region, the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment; in addition to climate change, disaster risk reduction, RICCAR, and climate change negotiations for Arab countries among others.

CCISUA 34th GA convenes in ESCWA for first time

For the first time, ESCWA Staff Council hosted the 34th Session of the General Assembly of the Coordinating Committee for International Staff Unions and Associations (CCISUA) in Beirut, on 21-24 May.

Stress was made on transparent communication and cooperation between staff representatives and management. Discussions also revolved around the UN reforms, gender parity, effective and full participation of persons with disabilities in all UN areas and activities, and rightful case of career development of staff in general service and related categories, as well as other issues. Mr. Larbi Djacta, Chairperson and Under-Secretary-General of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC), presented on the methodology for post adjustment review and compensation review for local staff.

Preceded by a one-day training on conflict resolution, the opening session took place on 22 May 2019 and saw remarks by the Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Ms. Rola Dashti, the President of CCISSUA. Mr. Ian Richard, and the Chairperson of ESCWA Staff Council, Ms. Mona Fattah.

ESCWA-UNITAR forthcoming regional learning conference

The Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Ms. Rola Dashti, received on 22 May the Acting Deputy Executive Director of the UN Institute for Training & Research (UNITAR), Mr. Alexander Mejia, who was participating in the 34th Session of the General Assembly of the Coordinating Committee for International Staff Unions and Associations (CCISUA) hosted by ESCWA Staff Council in Beirut.

The two officials discussed potential areas of cooperation and agreed to enhance mutual collaboration by jointly organizing a regional learning conference, among others, on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) later this year.

Violence against women has a huge cost for Arab societies. In Egypt, a study estimated that the total cost of violence against women amounted to at least 2.17 billion Egyptian pounds in a single year.

Child marriage remains widely ignored as a violation of health and development rights of girls and young women: in six Arab countries, more than 20% of girls were married before age 18 and 10 Arab countries legally allow underage girls to marry with their parents’ consent. In countries in conflict, child marriage is frequently an unfortunate coping mechanism.
